On September 26, 1937, Smith was en route to a show in Memphis, Tennessee with her companion of many years, Richard Morgan when he side swiped a truck and lost control of their car. Bessie was thrown from the vehicle and badly injured her right arm was nearly severed. The story is that the ambulance took her to the nearest white hospital but refused to treat her. So she was taken to G. T. Thomas Afro-American hospital and shortly died after arriving. But their are several different stories involving her death.
